In West Warwick, they laugh, sing and pause to remember

WEST WARWICK -- A small-town heartbreak calls for the tolling of bells on white-steepled churches and a moment of silence at the St. Patrick's Day parade. It also calls for a ham raffle, a spaghetti dinner at the bowling alley, and an electrician moonlighting as a karaoke-singing Elvis.

"Elvis is in the building! Elvis is in the building," promised the emcee at Evelyn's Villa. The King strutted onto the dance floor in a white lace-up jumpsuit, sideburns, and a pompadour, dyed, the program said, courtesy of Miss Clairol, Black Velvet, #512.

This was "the best Elvis impersonator in New England, the third best in the country." Put your hands together for Elvis, who had come all the way from Taunton, with a background track and a ballad for the heavy hearts: Walk a mile in my shoes, he crooned. Just walk a mile in my shoes.

This was the breathless, vulnerable Elvis, collar up, head down, reaping respect from a reverent audience who had gathered to raise money for families affected by The Station nightclub fire. But this was also feisty West Warwick, where, as the emcee said earlier, "when the chips are down, the people are up."

By the time Elvis was into "Suspicious Minds" -- because I love you too much baby -- the women from Stop & Shop were on their feet and waving their napkins. Other women had their chairs facing out, convenient for Elvis to stop by, shimmy down, and drape them with one of his silky white scarfs.

At a few tables, he stood on a chair, and placed one white boot on the tablecloth between the melting dishes of ice cream rolls, with heart-shaped strawberry centers. He swiveled his hips in front of the wife of a local politician. He skipped by an elderly woman who grinned at him, and one of his beaded tassles caught her chair, and yanked him back.

"Yeah, baby! Whew! Oh boy. Oh boy.

"Whoa! My belt is falling off! Oh my! How do you like the show? You guys have been a fantastic audience!"
